How To Get Sh*t Done

Get sh!t done

Do you find yourself distracted or overwhelmed by an unimaginable list of things to do?

Whether you’re balancing the birth of a newborn or trying to manage the pile of paperwork on your desk, the first step to getting sh*t done is recognizing and limiting your distractions.

Know Thy Distractions

Notice what “stops” you throughout the day. Are you looking up from your phone in a stupor after TikToking for 45 minutes thinking to yourself “gosh, I could’ve folded the laundry that’s on its third round of the ‘wrinkle’ cycle.”

Maybe you’ve opened the fridge for the eleventh time hoping for [insert comfort food here] to appear. Or, instead of actually doing some sort of physical activity, you have spent a ridiculous amount of time putting together the perfect workout routine (👋 I am totally guilty of this!). Essentially, what stops you from even starting?

Here are several common obstacles that get in the way of getting meaningful $hit done:

  • Working too much
  • Watching TV
  • Cleaning meticulously
  • Perusing social media
  • Eating out of emotion or boredom
  • Doing nothing

So what keeps you “too busy” from doing the things you really want or need to do? However, I would first challenge you to consider which tasks are indeed deserving of your time.

Are you playing “Super Mom” and over-involving yourself in the kids’ extra-curricular activities? Guess what, if you don’t bring the crockpot full of grape jelly meatballs to the dance tournament, another mom will. And no one will know any better!

Maybe you are drowning at work, yet the people pleaser in you couldn’t help but reluctantly smile and say “yes” to three other tasks at the last company meeting. It baffles me that we go so far to wear ourselves into exhaustion then flaunt it like a badge of honor. Let’s just stop that. Nobody wins.

Words from the Wise

“In order to kick ass you must first lift up your foot.”

– Jen Sincero

I am reading You Are a Badass®: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life^ by Jen Sincero, and this quote stopped me in my tracks. I thought about how many times the latter part of this quote (the “lifting up your foot” part) is so dang hard!

There are so many things that seem to get in our way. We find ourselves saying “Oh, I am too busy” or “I have to do XYZ.” Sounds like joy-sucking excuses. This book made me realize just that. Ask yourself, “What is getting in my way to do awesome things and living the awesome life I want to live?”

Yours truly,
