Wondering how to make the perfect low-calorie margarita? Impress friends and family with this easy homemade low carb margarita recipe. Launching just in time for your summer festivities, please help me welcome… the #fourcarbmarg.

To begin, here are a few tips for making the best of your low carb marg:

Use a variety of tequilas

In order to get the ideal mix of flavor, I used two different tequilas – silver and reposado. Silver tequila, otherwise known as blanco tequila, is tequila in its purest form and provides the “bite” of a traditional margarita.

Reposado tequila, on the other hand, is a “rested” or barrel-aged tequila, so this adds a tamer, more flavorful note to the drink. You could substitute reposado tequila with añejo tequila which is also barrel-aged, just for longer (usually one year or more).

The mixers

To cut calories and maximize the fresh citrus flavor in this low carb margarita recipe, light orange juice and fresh lime juice replace traditional margarita mix. Substituting a lower sugar OJ cuts calories and sugar by about 75% compared to using a ready-made margarita mix!

Finally, club soda and grapefruit bitters come together to round out this “healthy” margarita. If you are a newbie to grapefruit bitters, don’t be intimidated. They give this margarita an extra lift of citrus flavor and hint of bitterness. You can find them at your local liquor store or supermarket near other drink mixers.

Final touches

To keep this margarita recipe easy, it is served on the rocks, and the salted rim is optional. Personally, I don’t prefer my margarita with a salted rim (crazy I know right?!), but instructions are below to keep it kosher (get it?… kosher, like salt… haha).

You can opt to make a spicy margarita by adding additional jalapeño or omit if you prefer your marg on the tamer side. Fruit such as mango or strawberry would also add a splash of color and flavor – plus who doesn’t love booze-soaked fruit! 🙂

As with any alcoholic beverage, enjoy in moderation and be sure to plan for a safe ride home – that is, if you even plan to leave the house! Cheers!
